SEXUAL RISK AVOIDANCE EDUCATION
At Intersections, we believe that when young people are equipped with knowledge, guided by values, and affirmed in their identity, they are empowered to live with purpose and responsibility.
Our Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) program promotes healthy decision-making, strengthens families, and upholds the cultural values that shape our community. Rather than assuming teens will be sexually active, SRAE takes a prevention-first approach—providing youth with the knowledge, skills, and moral foundation to delay sexual activity and make choices that reflect their long-term goals, personal identity, and faith.
Grounded in social and cognitive development theories, the SRAE curriculum goes beyond teaching what to do—it helps students understand why it matters. Lessons focus on building essential life skills, including setting boundaries, resisting peer pressure, managing conflict, practicing self-governance, fostering healthy relationships, understanding reproductive health, and improving communication between parents and children.
The program also reinforces the Success Sequence—a proven framework of poverty prevention—by encouraging youth to finish school, pursue full-time work or higher education, and marry before having children.
Delivered by trained and certified educators in safe, inclusive settings, the SRAE program continues to make a meaningful impact, with over 90% of students reporting personal growth. Since 2012, Intersections has proudly implemented this vital program through funding from the U.S. Administration for Children and Families under the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program.
